Tip#1: No More Junk Food!

What I mean by junk food is anything that you know you shouldn’t be eating.  Specifically these things: deep fried foods, candy bars, french fries, cheeseburgers, high-fat foods like lasagna or cheesecake, high-sugar foods like just about all desserts and sweet snacks.  Donuts have got to go!

Jack LaLanne is perhaps the best known TV fitness personality (he’s been doing it longer than anyone).  He is close to 100 years old and he’s never eaten any junk food – ever!

More realistically for you and me… plan a “cheat” meal into your diet once a week to celebrate success and have a little bit of junk food (but don’t overdo it!).

Tip #2: No More Bad Carbs!

Bad carbs are the carbs which enter into your stomach and are converted quickly into glucose (blood sugar).  When your body doesn’t need the blood sugar it just stores the extra calories as fat!

Drop the bad carbs and you will help your body to quit storing fat.  Examples of bad carbs are: anything with high fructose corn syrup (!), anything made from enriched flour (!).  That means most waffles and syrup are off the list from now on!  Soda is a no no.

Most breads and tortillas are made from enriched flour.  Donuts, bagels, biscuits, rolls, muffins, breads, cakes, brownies – all of these are made from enriched flour.

Switch your grains to whole grains instead of enriched white flour.

Tip #3: No More Late Night Snacks!

This one isn’t a problem if you’ll get to bed and get all the rest that you need.  But if you’re a night owl like me, then you’ll notice those hunger pangs and you’ll want to do something about it.

Stop the late night snacking and go to sleep instead!  Getting the extra rest will help your metabolism and keep you from adding unnecessary calories each night (which quickly add up to extra pounds!).

tip #4: Don’t Drink So Much Beer or Wine!

If you’re an avid beer or wine drinker this will be difficult, but you must reduce your alcohol intake.  Those drinks are not calorie free, and the calories they have are usually the “bad carbs”.  If you must drink, do so in moderation and cut back from the normal amount you drink.

Tip #5: Increase Exercise or Activity

You don’t have to go to the gym for 3 hours every day, but you do need to increase your activity levels.  Even a small thing like getting a pedometer to measure your daily steps, and adding more steps each day, can really add up to extra weight lost.  Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator whenever you can.  Take breaks throughout your day and go for a brisk walk for 10 to 15 minutes.

Each of the tips I’ve listed here are simply to implement and follow – just takes willpower to stick with it!
