If you’re like I was, then you probably have no idea exactly how much food you eat each day – nor how many calories you eat.  But think about how easy it is for you to grab a snack and munch on it mindlessly.  I found that I could quickly and easily polish off a candy bar or granola bar without even really noticing it!  My stomach growled so I ate a granola bar – no real thought went into the process.

The problem is that, even though my brain didn’t care about the extra calories, my stomach and body had other plans!  And those small granola bars can quickly add up to quite a bit of extra calories in a day.   But, not until I started tracking my daily food intake (and calorie count) did I even notice where my problem was… I was eating too many calorie dense foods – especially my snacks!

Most people do not have a clue as to how many calories they eat in a day – nor do they know how many calories they should eat.  Researchers found out that even professional dietitians estimated their daily calories incorrectly – they were off by about 10% – and these are people for which diets and calories are a daily part of their job!

If they can’t guess their daily calories right – you and I shouldn’t expect to either!

So what should you do?  Get a journal and write in it every day, for every single bite you take!  Just forcing yourself to do this will cause you to lose a little weight because you’ll think before you tack each bite, “Do I know how many calories are in this bite of food?”

By using a diet journal, I was able to record my daily foods, exercise routines and body weight.  The best type of weight loss journal is one that you can keep with you everywhere you go so you can record your foods and activities as soon as you’re done.  If you wait to write it down when you get home or back to the office, you’re likely to forget some important things – or get so busy that you don’t record anything at all.
