You can (and should) use the principle of calorie reduction to help you lose weight fast!  But it is entirely possible to over use this concept!  Do it with moderation.  Instead of drastically reducing your caloric intake from 2300 cal/day down to 1000 cal/day, why not try reducing from 2300 calories down to 2000 calories?  This is a much easier plan to follow for an extended period of time.
