Fad Diets
The Atkins Diet, Cabbage Soup, 3 Day Diet, Grapefruit Diet, 7 Day Diet, Peanut Butter Diet, the list goes on and on. Which one is right for you?
The number of fast weight loss diets that promise amazing results come and go like fashion fads – which is why we call them “fad diets”. And just like fashion fads, some are better than others (does anyone remember leisure suits?). Running shoes, made popular by Nike, were once a fad but are now a staple in almost every household!
Similarly, some fad diets have withstood the test of time and we now look to them as “standard” diets. For example, the Atkins diet has been around since 1972 and its still being used successfully by people today all over the world. (There are also people who are using the Atkins diet incorrectly and not seeing great results with it – and they are making their health worse in the process!)
The Atkins diet started as a fad, but as a result, today we have low-carb high-protein diets popping up all over the place. In fact the low-carb high-protein concept is now the foundation for most successful diets today!
Are Fad Diets Unhealthy?
By their very nature, fad diets and crash diets, tend to be unhealthy if maintained for a long period of time. In general, I am opposed to most crash diets because they do not promote good health. The idea behind most quick weight loss diet plans is to trick your body into dropping several pounds really fast. Most of the weight you lose is water weight, which you will quickly gain back after you finish your fad diet cycle.
Do Fad Diets And Crash Diets Work To Lose Weight Fast?
Yes. They work or else they wouldn’t catch on and become a fad. But please remember most of these diets simply cause your body to quickly drop water weight rather than real fat loss.
Some fad diets are so unbalanced in their approach to nutrition that it is simply unfeasible for you to stay on these plans for any length of time. Remaining on a fad diet will almost always result in a nutritional deficit, not to mention that you will probably end up deficient in many essential vitamins and minerals.
What About Liquid Diets?
Liquid Diets also work to help you lose weight fast, but it depends upon which liquid diet you’re following. An all beer liquid diet may seem like an easy diet plan to follow, but there are long-term health consequences to consider. The same should be understood for any liquid diet. You just can’t stay on these for very long.
I have lost a few pounds quickly by following a very strict liquid diet consisting of protein shakes which I mixed from protein powder and organic skim milk. While on this diet I also took a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement because my body wasn’t getting any nutrients from fresh foods. Eventually I miixed in fresh fruits with the protein and milk. It was pretty tasty, but when that’s all you eat for several days it gets old very quickly.
Tips For Following Crash or Fad Diets
Two words: short term. Crash diets are not meant to be a long-term lifelong diet plan.
Look for a fad diet that has an induction phase (usually only a few weeks long – it is basically a crash diet), as well as a maintenance phase.
During the week of your crash diet – plan ahead for all your weak moments (e.g., all your friends call you out to lunch – what will you do?) Avoid situations that will put you in a spot where temptation could get to you.
Don’t over-exert yourself. The further you progress on your crash diet, the weaker you will feel (usually). So take it easy.
To deal with hunger pains – drink 8 oz. of water before you eat your planned meals or snacks.
After your diet cycle is completed, don’t blow it by over-celebrating. You could easily gain back all your lost water weight!
How do you pick the fast weight loss diet that’s right for you?
Pick a fast weight loss diet that promotes good health and allows you to eat a variety of foods – especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid diets that focus on only one type of food because of the nutritional deficit this causes to your body. Look for a diet that includes both an induction phase as well as a maintenance phase.
My Recommendations
There are only a handful of fast weight loss diets that I would actually recommend. Fat Loss For Idiots is a highly recommended online weight loss product based on the concept of Calorie Shifting.
